A super Thai pavilion — and place a Thai house compound inside it

Program: Private Residence

Client:  -

Size: 1,280 Sq.m.

Scope: Architectural Design and Interior Design

This project reimagines the relationship between two iconic Thai architectural forms: the Thai house compound (Mu Ruenthai) and the open-air pavilion (Sala Thai). Traditionally, the Mu Ruenthai comprises separate buildings for multi-generational living, while the Sala Thai serves as a casual pavilion for rest and contemplation. Despite its cultural significance, the traditional Mu Ruenthai layout is less suited to contemporary lifestyles due to its fragmented roofscape and dispersed spaces.

How, then, can we enjoy this cultural setting in a more practical, modern way?

This project proposes a reversed notion of scale: the overall building takes the form of one oversized, XL Thai pavilion that shelters an abstracted Thai house compound beneath a single, unifying roof.

The architecture is organized into two horizontal strata, separated by a clerestory.

  • Downstairs: an airy open plan for living, lounging, and art.

  • Upstairs: serene private suites, terraces, galleries, and meditation nooks — a contemporary take on the classic Thai house compound (Mu Ruenthai).

A translucent & perforated, double-layered roof filters sunlight, catches the breeze, and elevates the tropical experience.

Modern. Minimal. Thai at heart — immersed in tropical surroundings yet enriched with the subtle, timeless artistry of Thai tradition.
